Chattahoochee Mill Town

Apartments in Lanett, AL

Welcome to Lanett, an eastern Chambers County city on the Chattahoochee River across from West Point, Georgia, shaped by its textile-mill heritage and set beside West Point Lake along the I-85 corridor.

Lanett is a city in eastern Chambers County, Alabama, on the Chattahoochee River at the Georgia state line. Its eastern boundary is the Alabama-Georgia border itself, with the city of West Point, Georgia, immediately across the river — a position that has earned Lanett the nickname "Gateway to Alabama." The 2020 census recorded a population of about 7,000. The city's origins are industrial. It grew around the mills of the West Point Manufacturing Company, one of the South's major textile enterprises, and its very name is an amalgam of the surnames of two of the company's founders, Lafayette Lanier and Theodore Bennett. The Lanett cotton mill began operating in 1894, followed by the Lanett Bleachery and Dye Works, and the surrounding mill village formed the core of the modern city. That textile heritage remains woven into Lanett's identity even as the industry's local footprint has changed. Geography and recreation define the city today. West Point Lake, a large reservoir on the Chattahoochee River, borders the area and offers fishing, boating, kayaking, and camping, drawing outdoor recreation throughout the year. Interstate 85 runs just west of the city, placing Lanett southwest of Atlanta, about 45 minutes from Auburn and Opelika, and within a two-hour drive of Montgomery and Birmingham. Education is provided by the Lanett City School District, a municipal system, alongside the Chambers County School System for the surrounding county. Lanett suits families, commuters, and retirees seeking an affordable East Alabama setting with lake access, a proud mill-town heritage, and easy highway reach to both Alabama and Georgia destinations.
