Classic City in Northeast Georgia

Apartments in Athens, GA

Welcome to Athens, the Classic City and home of the University of Georgia, set among the rolling Piedmont hills of northeast Georgia.

Athens sits in Clarke County in northeast Georgia, about 70 miles east of Atlanta, on the Piedmont plateau where the North Oconee and Middle Oconee rivers meet to form the Oconee. The city and county operate as a single unified government, Athens-Clarke County, and the consolidated municipality has roughly 129,000 residents. Athens is defined above all by the University of Georgia, whose campus and research institutions anchor the local economy and set the rhythm of daily life, from lecture halls to Sanford Stadium on autumn Saturdays. Founded around the university's 1785 charter, Athens grew as a cotton and textile town before the university eclipsed all else. Its downtown retains a low-slung, brick storefront character, while surrounding streetcar-era neighborhoods hold one of Georgia's richest collections of historic architecture, with 16 local historic districts and dozens of National Register sites. That older fabric coexists with newer subdivisions on the city's edges and along the Barnett Shoals and Timothy Road corridors. The community is widely known for its music. The college-town scene that produced R.E.M., the B-52s, and Pylon earned Athens a national reputation as an incubator of alternative rock, a legacy celebrated today along the Athens Music Walk of Fame and at live venues across downtown. Beyond music and the university, the city offers the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, a growing greenway and rail-trail network, and a restaurant scene that draws chefs and food writers from across the region. Athens also functions as the commercial and cultural hub of a multi-county region in northeast Georgia, with healthcare, research, and education employment alongside the university. Its climate brings four distinct seasons, and the surrounding Piedmont countryside offers lakes, forests, and state parks within a short drive. Athens suits students, faculty and university staff, artists, and families drawn to a walkable historic core, strong public institutions, and an engaged cultural life.
